Panorama Easter Eggs made from sugar are a nostalgic flashback to my childhood.
As I have shared these eggs with my friends and on my socials the comment I repeatedly hear is, “Oh how wonderful, I remember these from my childhood! My (Insert here “grandmother,” “mom,” “aunt”) used to display these every Easter. ”
Or, ” I remember getting a sugar egg like these in my Easter Basket when I was a young.”
This same nastalgia is what drew me to revive the tradition of sugar eggs back into my own life. My mother used to make these when I was a little girl.
Panoramic Sugar Easter Eggs trace their origins back to 19th Century Europe. The tradition is largely credited to German artisans who created these confections for their wealthy patrons during the Easter season. The elaborately decorated eggs were made entirely of sugar, including the little diorama scenes inside the eggs. The scenes typically included flowers, chicks, lambs and bunnies made from icing. The outsides of the eggs were also decorated with even more royal icing flowers and embellishments.
Many of us from a. . . shall we say. . . “more experienced” generation remember our grandmothers and mothers having, or even making, these traditional eggs. Seeing them tugs at the heart strings for so many of us!
Admittedly the art of sugar panorama eggs has become a bit dormant over the last 20 to 30 years. Coming across some old 1970’s family photos of my mother’s sugar egg creations, I felt a nudge to resurrect the tradition for my own family.
My mom had more talent with royal icing than I do. She made them 100% completely from sugar and frosting. The flowers, the little bunnies and chicks, the whole thing, made of sugar.
The sugar eggs I’ve been making have a unique creative twist to these lovey little gems. Rather than creating my dioramas and decorations all in frosting, I envisioned using tiny delicate found items to create the little scenes. My own flair for sugar eggs has them adorned in ribbon and faux flowers rather than royal icing.
I’ve had a marvelous time over last few years creating a handful of new confections for each Easter season.
Last year I decided to host a hands on workshop with friends in my home, teaching them how to create their own eggs. This year I expanded that effort to teaching 3 workshops, all in one day, at the JeniBee Holiday Market. It’s so exhilarating to teach others while also gathering with others to chat it up while we create!
The process of teaching myself how to make the sugar egg shells was just that, a process!!! I scoured YouTube and Pinterest looking at the all the different tutorials and methods for creating the eggs. And then I tried them all!
In an effort to fine tune the best method, I wanted to experience first hand what worked. . . and what did not.
Through this process I went through lots of trial and lots of error! So much error! The upside is now you won’t have to! I’m here to share only the best of the best of what works, you don’t have to waste your time on what does NOT work! Your welcome.
