DIY Olympic Themed Vases

DIY Olympic Games Decor – Olympic Ring Vases

DIY your own Olympic party decor
with these quick & simple to make
Olympic themed vases.

The Summer 2024 Olympics are finally upon us! I’ve been getting all ready by DIYing some fun Olympic Decor for my watch party gatherings!

I’ve had a really hard time finding any cute Olympic themed decor on Amazon. And I’ve seen nadda, zippo, absolutely nothing in stores. Cute or otherwise. I’m shocked that more retail outlets aren’t capitalizing on Olympic merchandise? Not even any cereal boxes out there proclaiming to be the “breakfast of champions!”

So I decided to make my own. . . I want to have a small Opening Ceremonies themed party this weekend. I think it would be fun to hang out and watch with a few friends! Also, my producer at Studio-5 asked me to create some fun decor ideas on hosting Olympic themed parties for my segment last week. So I’m in the mode. You can watch that HERE if you missed it!

I decided to go with an international flag theme for my Olympic Decor. I ordered lots of flags on Amazon; flag banners, table top flags on a stick and even little mini flags on tooth-picks for the food.

Instead of flower arrangements, I’m going with flag arrangements. Here’s a really great, super fast, super easy little DIY vase project to create some real Wow factor!

Tutorial:

Supplies:

  • All you’ll need is some electrical tape in the colors of the Olympic Rings
(Blue, Red, Black, Yellow & Green). HERE
  • Cylinder shaped clear glass vases. HERE
  • Sizzors
  • Flags (HERE)
  • Clear Floral Sticks (optional) HERE
  • Ceramic Pie Weights (also optional) HERE

Step 1 – Use a clear, clean and dry cylinder shaped vase.

Step 2 – Use colored electrical tape to make stripes or “rings” on the vases. For full Olympic effect, use the colors of the Olympic Rings, which are blue, green, black, yellow & red.

Step 3 – Lay the vase horizontally on the table with the elecrical tape layed out benith it. Roll the vase evenly over the tape and wrap it around to create straight even stripes. A word of caution; electicla tape is stretchy, be careful not to pull on it as you wrap it around your vase or it will create uneven stripes.

Step 4 – Cut the tape.

Step 5 – Start and stop the rest of your stripes in the same place so all of your seams line up evenly and create a nice, clean visual line. This will be the backside of the vase, but you still want it to look nice.

Step 6 – If you want, you can measure out your stripes to make them all exactly spaced. I did not, and I feel just great about the way mine turned out!

Instead I did them in order and I “eyeballed” it. I did the bottom stripe first. The top stripe second. Then I gagged the middle and placed the black stripe in the middle. Next I determined the mid-point between the top stripe and the middle black stripe. Last I eyeballed the mid-point between the bottom stripe and the black middle stripe. By finding what looks like the mid-point in smaller sections, it turns out really fine!

Extra Hints

Hint #1:
Rather than using the black or white sticks that the flags came with, I put the flags on clear floral sticks instead. Here’s why; I wanted the sticks to fade away as much as possible so the colored rings will be the stars! Also, the floral sticks are much longer and make it so the flags stand up higher in the vases rather than covering up the rings.

Hint #2
I also made some vases where I didnt’ space the stripes apart, but rather put them together to form a unified band. In these vases I decided to use little round ceramic pie weights as filler. The pie weights look cool in the vases and create a nice medium to place and hold the flags where I want them.

That’s it! It might take you 10 minutes total once you have your supplies gathered. Have fun! And don’t forget to send me photos!
